question about nosferatu dvd

topic posted Sun, February 15, 2004 - 4:23 AM by  Sandro
hey there, I just got nosferatu on dvd (the very first one)... and it's very strange. I thought this is a pure and simple b/w silent movie. but the version I've got is not b/w, it changes all the time from different duotones. once its reddish, once blueish... etc. looks like shit. this can't be the original version, right?

It sounds like the first version of it that I ever saw, and I've yet to see a different one. I think they tried to do what they did when they remastered the Phantom of the Opera silent film (in which a few scences are in duotones and the Masquerade ball is in Technicolor). A few of those went horribly wrong, too. It could be the remastered version, because I think the ORIGINAL oringal version was lost after they remastered it the first time.

I hope this is a tiny bit helpful ^.^''

yes thank you. do you know if there is a version on dvd that is plain b/w, not technicolored or duotone? this looks soooo cheap, I had to stop the movie after 10 mins... I just hope, I can send the dvd back (cause when I ordered it, they told me, its b/w but it wasn't so they kinda sold me something wrong).

Like I said, I'm not sure if a non-duotone version still exists, but you can shop around. Perhaps someone else here would know.

And as far as it looking cheap, the black and white version may end up looking like that, too. You never know. Old movies like that are normally in a state of severe deterioration and cannot be repaired, so they look like they were carelessly remastered when they are transferred to DVD format.

you know, being a digital artist myself whose day-job includes editing videos this version of nosferatu made me sick. I know how old movies look like. and I don't think that those movies look like crap as the version I have dies. you cannot compare old movies to new ones. the thing that made me mad about this nosferatu version I have is just the coloration. done by freakin' amateurs. I don't think in 1922 they already had the colored version... the pics in this tribe's gallery are all b/w so I guess there must be an original b/w version.

You guys got it all wrong!

The orignal version WAS toned. Many silent films were, back then. Blue for night. Green for danger. etc. Even the original B/W "Frankenstein" was toned European style. That's part of what made it shocking. But the Germans were doing it from early on. Post-Caligari but definitely Nosferatu. Long ago, I knew a man who saw both Nosferatu and Metropolis in their first (American) run (in New Yawk) and he remembered their toning. He died in 1990. I was there to close his eyes. Great man.

But I digress. By our standards, the toning WAS done by amateurs. But don't be like those British antiquarians who cleaned all the paint off the ancient Greek statues so that they'd look more like the way we remember ancient Greek statuary. When Hutter crosses the bridge, he's SUPPOSED to be blue.

But there are about 10 different versions of Nosferatu out there on DVD. All of them flawed in some way or another. But at least the newer ones give you the whole film.

And none has good music. I do occaisional scoring work for an indie film distributor and I've been on them for years to do a GOOD Nosferatu. I've written half the score already while waiting.

My biggest complaint about ALL of the DVDs is the inter-titles. None of them ever even tries to match to the film, so they just jar you out of the mood you're in when you're watching. I just wish someone would fix that. But with so many versions out there, the DVD community treats it as a disposable "Cheezy Vampire Flick."

I sprung for the Black-Hawk Films version on 16mm film last year. It's the edited-down American release in true B/W. I haven't found an occaision to screen it yet, but I can hardly wait.... when I do, I'll post so that those of you in L.A. can see it projected.

Y'know, I hadn't the faintest idea that this was the case [regarding the color-coding]. Thanks for the clue!!

And I challenge the claim that there isn't a version of Nosferatu with "good music". The copy I have is a late-80's/early-90's VHS with the score provided by Club Foot Orchestra - very cool, very disturbing, originally available from Ralph Records, but I have no idea if it still is...

...and if you wouldn't mind, email me directly at savage@sinistervisions.com - I may have an occasion or two for you to screen your 16mm...

Heard their "Metropolis" score and was underwhelmed, but I'll give anything a serious listen. Couldn't be worse than the dozen or so out there.

Strangely, the best music (though hardly a score "to picture" in any sense) is the Type-O Negative music. It's really just an excuse to have an image going with an album of theirs. They're not usually my cup of tea usually, but it beats all the other crap I've heard. We'll discuss screenings soon...

The version with the Clubfoot Orchestra is available at their website www.clubfoot.com/

Two Halloweens ago I saw Nosferatu with Jill Tracy and The Malcontent Orchestra playing their original score. Great!!!

Her web site is www.jilltracy.com/ There are apparently no plans for any performances this year. The CD is available for sale, but it is only a small part of the whole score.

                Alas...the longing that never ends...

The best score I've ever heard for Nosferatu is undoubtedly Jill Tracy's! Along with her stunning piano parts are cello, violins, marimba and percussion. Very elegant, eerie, befitting of the time period...and completely brings the film to life like no other score I've heard. She celebrated her fifth year anniversary of performing the score throughout the Bay Area last year. It only exists on CD at this point, called "Into the Land of Phantoms." It's available online at Amazon or CD Baby. I know they have a DVD version in the works. I had heard Clive Barker was going to produce it!

Actually Jill Tracy fans have just begun a new tribe called Pretty Little Rage. JillTracy.tribe.net
                  Her website is: www.jilltracy.com

Word has it Jill Tracy will be the leading lady of a Grand Guignol theatre show in San Francisco in October/November. That is why Nosferatu will not tour this fall.

I've studied typography/lithography/design and decided that this was too boring so I started teaching myself other things like web design and other multimedia stuff. and by accident I found a job at a multi media agency... I guess I was just lucky...

yeah, it's a fun profession. in general... it's no dream job though ;-)
